Future Traffic Projections

Every five years Metro COG partners with NDSU's Advanced Traffic Analysis Center (ATAC) and coordinates with local jurisdictions to update the Fargo-Moorhead regional travel demand model.  This model uses base year data and future year projections to estimate future traffic conditions on roadways in the Fargo-Moorhead region.  Future year model runs include projected jobs and households which are assigned to traffic analysis zones throughout the region.  These jobs and household projections come from Metro COG's most recent demographics forecast study.

The most recent model was completed in 2023 and uses 2021 as the base year.  The two forecast years are 2035 and 2050.  The roadway network used in the model's forecast years doesn't include capacity improvements, except for programmed projects within a few years after 2021.

To view the 2050 travel demand model, which also includes forecast year 2035, please click on the link below.  The default map displays projected year 2050 traffic (annual average daily traffic).  To view other map displays, click on the 'Layers' icon on the map.  To view specific data per roadway link, simply click on the roadway.
